What to Expect from Your First Botox® Treatment
If you’ve never gotten Botox® before, getting these injections for the first time might feel a little overwhelming or maybe even a little frightening. Discover what you need to know before getting Botox for the first time.

Even the most exhaustive and rigid skincare routines can’t prevent the formation of wrinkles. Although some people may embrace the signs of a well-lived life, many people turn to cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Botox® is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatment in the United States, and it’s not hard to understand why. This aesthetic injection has the incredible ability to rejuvenate aging skin by erasing fine lines and wrinkles.

Martha Ayewah, DO, and our Ayewah Aesthetics team in the Midtown West area of New York City, New York, offer Botox to reverse signs of aging and provide you with a younger and revitalized appearance.

This month’s blog explores what you need to know about undergoing this transformative treatment.

Understanding Botox

Botox is the brand name of an FDA-approved cosmetic injection that contains a toxin made from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When the toxin gets injected into your facial muscles, nerve signals to that muscle are blocked, and it can no longer respond to your various colorful facial expressions. The temporary muscle paralysis causes your face to relax, providing you with a smoother and softer complexion.

These injections address crow’s feet, eyebrow lines, and forehead lines.

What to expect from your Botox session

Botox is a minimally invasive, safe procedure. Even though we use needles to inject the Botox into the desired area, you should experience little to no discomfort. If you are worried about pain, we can apply a local numbing agent to keep you comfortable.

Your Botox session should only take about 10-15 minutes, which is why it’s so often referred to as a “lunchtime” procedure. We can get you in and out of our office quickly, and you don’t need any recovery or downtime afterward. You can watch your results develop over the next week or two.

How to prepare for your first Botox appointment

If it’s your first time getting Botox, before we do any injections, we discuss your medical history along with allergies or medical conditions you have. This step also allows us to discuss your aesthetic goals to ensure Botox is the correct treatment.

On the day of your Botox appointment, cleanse your face thoroughly and remove any makeup. You may also want to avoid taking any blood thinners since these can increase your risk of bruising.

After your injections, avoid rubbing or putting pressure on the treatment area since this could spread the Botox to other parts of your face.
